Interpreting Research in CBT

A one day course that enables delegates to understand, interpret and use CBT research to enhance their practice as well as defend and explain its evidence base with colleagues and clients. Delegates will learn the practical skills of how to critically appraise published research during the course of the day.

Can be taken as an individual one-day course or as a part of a Master Practitioner Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Approved by the British Psychological Society Learning Centre.

Issues covered include:

  • What makes CBT so successful in providing hard evidence?
    • History of evidence based interventions
    • Philosophy of creating evidence (pros and cons of the positivistic model)
  • How do we know that treatment is effective? Levels of evidence:
    • Case series; Controlled case studies; RCT; Meta analysis
  • CBT components
    • Outcome measures (Scales and Questionnaires)
      • Disorder specific Scales
      • General scales
    • Treatment manuals
    • Modularisation and component studies
  • How to find effective interventions in the literature? What are the facts?
    • Disorder (group) specific evidence (group work to apply knowledge)
    • Long term vs Short term
    • Medicine vs CBT
    • Psychological interventions vs CBT

This course is part of the training programme that enables you to complete the BPS Approved Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. You can build up gradually your CBT training portfolio by attending all the courses within the programme at the pace that suits you. All your training hours will be calculated, recorded in an individual validated log and accumulated towards your full Diploma.

IMPORTANT! THIS IS A BPS APPROVED COURSE AND ALL THE TRAINING HOURS OF THIS COURSE SHOULD BE COMPLETED IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THE BPS APPROVED CERTIFICATE.
Please make sure that you arrive in time for 9.30 AM start (sharp!). Your late arrival might result in you not been eligible for the BPS Approved Certificate.
The same applies to the finish times. Make sure that your travel arrangements enable you to be present until 4.30 PM every day of the course.
We very much appreciate your co-operation on this matter.

Every day consists of the morning session (starting at 9.30 AM sharp!) and afternoon session (finishing at 4.30 PM strictly).
Refreshments provided during your morning (11.15) and afternoon (14.45) break.
Lunch break (1 hour) – lunch by own arrangements (12.30 – 13.30).

Due to the INTENSIVE NATURE of this training we advise you to have extra drinks of water with you and layers of clothing to adjust effectively to the temperature in the room.

Course Leader:

Dr Tom Werner
Consultant Psychiatrist

Tom is a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist at South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. He trained and worked at the Centre for Anxiety Disorder and Trauma, Maudsley Hospital and in the Cognitive Therapies Division of City & Hackney’s Psychotherapy Department. He has extensive experience of working with a range of different client groups including adult mental health, older people, substance misusers, children and families. He trained in CBT at Kings College, London, and is a BABCP Accredited CBT Therapist. He also has experience of working with a range of other modalities including (amongst others) Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Kleinian psychodynamic psychotherapy, NLP and systemic family therapy. He has a particular interest in trainee learning styles and has an excellent reputation as an informed and dynamic trainer.
