The day covers definitions of health anxiety, theories regarding its development and practical CBT interventions for addressing this frequently debilitating and distressing problem.
Can be taken as an individual one-day course or as a part of a Master Practitioner Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Approved by the British Psychological Society Learning Centre.
Issues covered include:
- Definitions and demographics
- Salkovskis’ and Warwick’s cognitive misinterpretation model of health anxiety
- Motivational & engagement issues with clients
- The use of Socratic Questioning to socialise the client into reconceptualising their health problems
- The use of behavioural experiments to explore and challenge health beliefs
- Reducing medical reassurance seeking
- The use of the inverted pyramid technique and pie charts to reduce sense of medical risk
This course is part of the training programme that enables you to complete the BPS Approved Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. You can build up gradually your CBT training portfolio by attending all the courses within the programme at the pace that suits you. All your training hours will be calculated, recorded in an individual validated log and accumulated towards your full Diploma.

As a recent Programme Director of the CBT High Intensity course at Christ Church University, Julia has unparalleled knowledge and experience of CBT training, supervision and practice across a wide range of mental health conditions. She has particular knowledge of the CBT Accreditation process in the UK and has the experience of facilitating numerous students through the KSA route as well. Her current research interests focus on emotional well-being in the workplace and factors influencing return and retention at work along with the issue of workplace bullying.
