This innovative and comprehensive 19 day course provides participants with skills to use the core principles of CBT with Children and Adolescents. It was designed for SDS Seminars Ltd by Dr Andrew Beck, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester, Senior Lecturer on the Children and Young People’s IAPT programme, a member of the BABCP Scientific Committee, a President of BABCP (2020). The course emphasises strong links between theory and practice with a particular focus on the development of practical skills used in the treatment of commonly occurring emotional and behavioural problems.

This innovative and comprehensive 19 day course will provide participants with the skills to use the core principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Children and Adolescents. The course emphasises strong links between theory and practice with a particular focus on the development of practical skills used in the treatment of commonly occurring emotional and behavioural problems. Participants will develop skills in assessment, formulation and treatment of mental health problems with particular emphasis on how these need to be adapted to take into account the cognitive and emotional development of the child, the culture and context of the child and family and the presence of neuro-developmental disorders such as ADHD, Learning Difficulties or Autism.

There will be particular attention paid to the need to embed assessment, formulation and treatment in the family system and to include parents as co-therapists wherever possible. To support this work the course includes teaching on engaging and supporting parents and teachers to utilise CBT techniques to aid the development of a child’s social and emotional regulation, and to develop skills in the implementation of strategies to manage externalising behaviours.
The course will also consider the impact of childhood trauma on the development of mental health problems and enable participants to understand the degree to which a history of trauma might need to be taken into account as well as the degree to which culture, religion and ethnicity need to be considered when adapting CBT for children and young people.

SDS Accreditation Levels for CBT Training
SDS Accreditation, Level 1
SDS Accreditation, Level 1 (CBT Practitioner, Foundation Stage) is the level of accreditation you obtain by attending the CBT: Introductory Course, completing the relevant Evidence Reading Module and passing the online test.
This level of accreditation gives you a BPS Approved Certificate, and enables you to state in your CV that you have Level 1 (Foundation) Accreditation as a CBT Practitioner, and use PCBT (Foundation) qualification in your title.
Without further training, your accreditation currently lasts for 3 years, after which you cannot make the above statement. However, continuing training in CBT with SDS Seminars after the completion of your CBT Introductory Course enables you to extend this accreditation beyond the initial expiration date. (Full list of the appropriate training courses is available from SDS Seminars Ltd). Should you let your accreditation lapse, you need to retake CBT: Introductory Course.
SDS Accreditation, Level 2
SDS Accreditation Level 2 in CBT for Children and Adolescents (Assessed Academic Competence) means you have completed all the hours required by the BPS Approved Certificate in CBT for Children and Adolescents and also passed the final online exam.
This level of accreditation gives you a BPS Approved Certificate in CBT for Children and Adolescents, and enables you to state in your CV that you have Level 2 (Assessed Academic Competence) Accreditation in CBT for Children and Adolescents qualification (CBT C&A AAC).
Your accreditation currently lasts for 3 years, after which you cannot make the above statement. This level of accreditation is renewable by continuing training in CBT with SDS Seminars after the completion of your Certificate.
