This training covers issues of definitions of anger, how anger problems develop, a multi-pathway model of anger, along with a range of CBT interventions as they apply to Anger problems.
This course is part of the training programme that enables you to complete the BPS Approved Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. You can build up gradually your CBT training portfolio by attending all the courses within the programme at the pace that suits you. All your training hours will be calculated, recorded in an individual validated log and accumulated towards your full Diploma.

Anger problems are a central emotional difficulty both as a standalone and in a wide range of other emotional problems - from grief and anxiety to self-harm and PTSD to bullying and offending. This detailed two day course addresses this difficult area both in terms of understanding and assessment as well as motivational issues and treatment.

- Definitional issues – or why anger is different from other emotional states
- Assessment – NAS and STAXI and case formulation
- Arousal and its role in anger problems
- The social context of anger problems
- Common cognitive distortions with anger problems – from biased attributional thinking to low tolerance of discordant events and their impact
- Anger beliefs and their relationship with anger (suppression vs expression)
- The role of substance consumption and anger problems
- ICS Model – or why clients with anger problems so readily perceive threats and injustice
- Motivational issues – or how anger problems might be reframed as addictive problems
- Assessing client motivation and how to address it in therapy
- Psycho-educational approaches to anger management
- Novoco’s Stress inoculation Model of Therapy
- Description, demonstration and practice of the BARB technique
- Cognitive interventions with anger – use of Pie Charts, behavioural experiments and evidence re-evaluation
- Running Anger Management Group issues

- Dealing with client’s poor impulse control in groups
