At present 40% of disability worldwide is due to depression and anxiety.
The most recent Psychiatric Morbidity Survey reports that there are 6 million people in the UK suffering with these problems: approximately 3 million with depression as their primary problem and 3 million with an anxiety disorder. Generalised anxiety disorder was the most commonly identified common mental health disorder in 2014, followed by depressive episodes. The absolute numbers of both have been increasing exponentially in the last years.
Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a most common anxiety condition, estimated to affect up to 5% of the UK population. Slightly more women are affected than men, and the condition is more prevalent in people from the ages of 35 to 59.
NICE guidelines for Generalized anxiety disorder(Last revised in October 2017) recommend low- and high-intensity CBT as a treatment of choice for GAD.
