Approved by the British Psychological Society for the purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

1 day 7 CPD hours

Course Brief

A one day course that enables delegates to understand, interpret and use CBT research to enhance their practice as well as defend and explain its evidence base with colleagues and clients. Delegates will learn the practical skills of how to critically appraise published research during the course of the day.

This course is part of the training programme that enables you to complete the BPS Approved Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. You can build up gradually your CBT training portfolio by attending all the courses within the programme at the pace that suits you. All your training hours will be calculated, recorded in an individual validated log and accumulated towards your full Diploma.

This course will be interesting and useful to therapists working in different clinical fields with a variety of clients, using a broad range of therapeutic modalities, not exclusively to those who practise CBT.

Issues covered include:

  • What makes CBT so successful in providing hard evidence?
    • History of evidence based interventions
    • Philosophy of creating evidence (pros and cons of the positivistic model)
  • How do we know that treatment is effective? Levels of evidence:
    • Case series; Controlled case studies; RCT; Meta analysis
  • CBT components
    • Outcome measures (Scales and Questionnaires)
      • Disorder specific Scales
      • General scales
    • Treatment manuals
    • Modularisation and component studies
  • How to find effective interventions in the literature? What are the facts?
    • Disorder (group) specific evidence (group work to apply knowledge)
    • Long term vs Short term
    • Medicine vs CBT
    • Psychological interventions vs CBT
