Overcoming Rumination and Overthinking

A practical six-hour course (delivered over two half-days) for mental health professionals seeking to deepen their skills in working with clients who engage in rumination or overthinking, particularly those whose internal dialogues are dominated by recurring thoughts such as “What if…”, “If only…”, or “I wonder if…”.

Rumination and overthinking are transdiagnostic cognitive processes that contribute to the onset and maintenance of a wide range of psychological difficulties, including Depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety, and Eating Disorders. Understanding and addressing these patterns can play a significant role in improving clinical outcomes across a broad spectrum of presentations.

Issues addressed include:

  • What are rumination and overthinking?
  • Are they a single phenomenon or distinct processes?
  • How do rumination and overthinking interfere with functioning—both psychological and physical?
  • Evidence-based strategies for addressing the negative content of thoughts, including adapted cognitive restructuring and behavioural experiments
  • Interventions targeting the unhelpful thinking process itself, such as stimulus control, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), metacognitive techniques, and cognitive defusion strategies
  • Supporting clients in developing greater tolerance for uncertainty and reducing associated distress
  • CPD: 6 Hours
  • Mode: Live on Zoom or watch as a recording after the course date.
  • Dates: 28 October and 4 November 2025
